Longhorns Daily News: Texas’ Steve Sarkisian signals support for fifth year eligibility

by

The latest potential change ricocheting across college football is an idea to eliminate the redshirt season and, instead, give players five years of eligibility. The concept’s increase in traction comes as the NCAA Oversight Committee decision to eliminate the NCAA Transfer Portal’s spring window, leaving only a fall portal window.

“Give the length of our season, I would,” Sarkisian said this week, referring to replacing the redshirt rule, per 247Sports.

“You get to play four games in the regular season, and then once postseason play begins, those games don’t count [towards a redshirt],” Sarkisian added. “So, you can play four in the regular season, then play the entire postseason and still have a redshirt eligible. To me, why not just give them the whole year and let these guys play.”
