Lorenzo Sonego has had a fairly difficult start to the season.
The Italian ace – who has just started the second part of his career – has started a new technical project together with Vincenzo Santopadre, who has a lot of experience having been the coach of former world number 6 Matteo Berrettini during the best period of his career.
He played the Australian Open last month and hoped to get as far as possible at Melbourne Park, but the draw was particularly tough and his run ended against his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in the second round.
Sonego had beaten Musetti in their last official clash, staged at the Paris Masters 1000 at the end of last year, but the talent from Carrara put in a near-perfect performance in Australia and gave him no chance.
The 30-year-old from Turin – who dropped out of the Top 60 of the ATP ranking – had to admit that his compatriot has improved from all points of view and has started preparing for tournaments in South America, where the goal was to earn as many points as possible.
Sonego is injured
Lorenzo was unable to play in Buenos Aires without revealing the exact reason for his decision, before also missing the Rio de Janeiro ATP 500 just before facing his huge friend Matteo Berrettini. A little while ago, the news arrived that Sonego will not be present at the Santiago de Chile ATP 250 either.
Through a post on his official Instagram profile, the Italian veteran explained the situation: "I had to miss the last few tournaments due to a wrist injury. I'm so sorry not to be able to compete in a part of the season that has always been exciting for me, as the South American fans are some of the most electrifying on the tour. I want to thank the tournament organizers for their support and understanding, in the meantime I will continue to work to get back into action as soon as possible."
Sonego also revealed that his next tournament will be the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in March.
