And 19 years after he took over the program, Walz reached his 500thย career head coaching victory, all of which came at UofL, after the No. 13 Cardinals defeated Virginia Tech,ย 85-60, on Sunday at theย KFC Yum! Center.
โI applied for several jobs throughout my career to be a head coach.ย Louisville and Tom (Jurich) and Julie Hermann were the ones that gave me a chance, thatย gave me an opportunity,โ Walz said Thursday.ย โAnd to be here for 19 years,ย it’sย just not the norm. … I love every second thatย I’veย been here.ย It’sย home.โ
Walzย is the 29thย active Division I head coach andย third ACC coach to reach the feat after Miami coach Tricia Cullop picked upย her 500thย career victory Thursday. The Hurricanes defeatedย the Hokies, 75-67, in overtime. N.C. State coach Wes Moore has long surpassed the 500-win mark and has the second-mostย wins of active Division I womenโs basketball coaches behind UConnโs Geno Auriemma.
โI’mย glad thatย we’veย taken the time throughout the 19 years to enjoy the moments thatย we’veย had, because you never know ifย they’reย coming back again,โ Walz said.ย โEverybodyย is trying to win.ย And if youย don’tย take the time to enjoy the good times, then allย you’reย going to live with is theย bad times.โ
