LSU football defense pulls off historic feat in win over Florida

LSU football’s defense posted a historical performance vs. Florida on Saturday night.

The Tigers came away with five interceptions off of throws from the Gators’ quarterback DJ Lagway in the 20-10 victory. One was a pick-six as Dashawn Spears took one 58 yards to the house in the third quarter.

The last time LSU finished with five interceptions was in 2020 against Ole Miss. Rebels’ quarterback Matt Coral threw every pick. On Saturday, the Tigers forced Lagway into uncomfortable throws and found themselves in the right spots to make the plays.

Spears had two interceptions, one in the first quarter, then the pick-six in the third. AJ Haulcy, DJ Pickett, and Tamarcus Cooley each caught an interception as well. The Tigers picked off Lagway three times in the second half, putting the ball back into their offense’s hands.

Spears’ second pick of the game gave the Tigers a much-needed insurance score. Lagway’s attempt on third and 18 was well short of his intended receiver. Spears took the interception in stride and never looked back as he sent Tiger Stadium into celebration.

The final interception of the game came with under three minutes left in the game. Lagway most likely was trying to throw the ball out of bounds, but Pickett swooped in and made him pay. It is the true freshman’s first interception of his career.

In what was a low-scoring two-possession game, LSU needed to make things happen on the defensive end. Despite fielding multiple transfers, the secondary is clicking early in the season.
