Following his performance in No. 9 LSU football’s week one win over No. 4 Clemson, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.
In the Tigers’ 17-10 upset victory, Nussmeier completed 28 of his 38 pass attempts for 230 yards and one touchdown. It was the first start of his second year at the helm of LSU’s offense.

LSU played from behind for much of the contest, but Nussmeier led a strong second-half performance to propel the Tigers in front. On his first pass attempt of the second half, he threw a 39-yard dart to Aaron Anderson for a first down, then completed passes of 14 and 16 yards to get LSU into the red zone, setting Caden Durham up for the score, which tied the game at 10-10.
Nussmeier led a 73-yard drive that ended in the eventual game-winning touchdown on LSU’s first possession of the fourth quarter. After two penalties that put the Tigers behind the sticks, he found Anderson for a 13-yard gain. At the Clemson eight-yard line, Nussmeier found Trey’Dez Green on the outside in the end zone.
In a low-scoring game where every possession mattered, Nussmeier took care of the ball and found the end zone when it mattered most.
