LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier landed on the watchlist for the Davey O’Brien award, announced Thursday.
The trophy is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. Former Tigers Joe Burrow (2019) and Jayden Daniels (2023) took home the honor in the same seasons they won the Heisman Trophy.

Nussmeier is returning for a second season as the starting quarterback and was already named to the Maxwell Award watchlist. He is under 4,000 yards away from breaking the program’s all-time passing yards mark. Last year, he threw for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns.
The Lake Charles, LA native will enter his fifth season at his home state school and has new weapons at his disposal thanks to LSU’s work in the transfer portal. Head coach Brian Kelly’s staff brought in the 2025 cycle’s top class, which included a haul of experienced power four wide receivers and tight ends.
Combined with returning talent in pass catchers Aaron Anderson and Chris Hilton along with a solidified starting rotation at offensive line, the Tigers’ offense seems strong with Nussmeier at the helm once again.
