LSU football sought a bona fide QB1 in the transfer portal. Lane Kiffin and the Tigers got what they were looking for with the addition of former Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt.
But LSU needed more than just a QB1. The entire room needed to be made from scratch after LSU was left without a single scholarship QB upong Micahel Van Buren hitting the transfer portal.

The Tigers also signed USC transfer Husan Longstreet and Elon transfer Landen Clark.
Kiffin, who earned the reputation of “Portal King” at Ole Miss, is no stranger to recruiting transfer portal quarterbacks. The 2025 Rebels were led to the playoffs by Trinidad Chambliss, a QB transfer from the D-II level. Prior to Chambliss, Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart cemented his legacy as one of the best QBs in Rebels’ history.
Longstreet was one of the portal’s top-ranked QBs, but Kiffin and staff managed to earn his commitment despite Leavitt signing with LSU. Longstreet will be a backup in 2026 before competing for the starting job in 2027. Leavitt has swallowed up the headlines, so Longstreet may have flown under the radar. Longstreet was a five-star QB recruit out of high school
Longstreet was one of the top-ranked high school QBs in the 2025 recruiting class. On3 was highest on the California native, slotting Longstreet as the No. 3-ranked QB in the nation and No. 12 overall player. 247Sports wasn’t far behind, also giving Longstreet five stars and ranking him as the No. 4 QB in the country.

There’s some irony in this. LSU failed to land a top quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class after Bruyce Underwood flipped to Michigan. Now, a year later, the Tigers got their guy.
What did high school scouts say about Longstreet?
Rivals’ scout Charles Power offered a detailed report of Longsreet as a prospect before he signed with USC. Power said Longstreet had a “flamethrower” and that Longstreet’s arm was arguably the strongest of the recruiting cycle.
“Capable of touching all areas of the field with his phenomenal arm strength. Passes have considerable velocity. Throws with a whippy ¾ to sidearm delivery,” Power wrote.

Power also highlighted what Longstreet can do with his legs, saying the athletic QB is speedy enough to handle designed runs and make defenders miss in space.
“Doesn’t have great stature when projecting him as a pocket operator and can continue improving his consistency and ability to layer his passes. Combination of elite arm talent and athleticism gives him one of the highest ceilings among 2025 quarterback prospects,” Power wrote.
What did Longstreet do in 2025?
Longstreet didn’t see the field much, taking a redshirt with the Trojans, but he saw sparing action in blowouts.
Longstreet completed nine passes on nine attempts vs. Missouri State, throwing for 69 yards and tossing a touchdown. He was four of six vs. Georgia Southern for 34 yards. He didn’t throw a pick in either game.

On the ground, Longstreet ran the ball 10 times for 81 yards in 2025. He averaged 8.1 yards per attempt and scored twice.
Longstreet spent a year developing under Lincoln Riley
Longstreet only spent one season at USC, but he spent it with one of the top offensive minds of this generation — USC head coach Lincoln Riley. That’s valuable experience for a young quarterback. Now, Longstreet heads to LSU, where he’ll get to work with another defining offensive mind of this era — Lane Kiffin.
