There’s never a bad time to get a little workout in. Even if you’re in the middle of an at-bat.
Padres first baseman Luis Arraez demonstrated his commitment to fitness in a moment of levity Tuesday night during his team’s 6-2 loss to the Orioles at Petco Park. Batting with a runner on third base and two outs, Arraez took a 1-2 slider down and in from Baltimore starter Tyler Wells. With the pitch coming at his shoetops, Arraez hit the deck to get out of the way — but that wasn’t all.
Sprawled out on the dirt with his left hand still gripping his bat and his right hand on home plate, Arraez knocked out two quick push-ups before clambering back to his feet. He wasn’t the first ballplayer to practice his form during a game, either: Andrew McCutchen once did push-ups at third base after dodging a foul ball.
The extra exercise didn’t have any immediate benefit for Arraez, who flied out to center field on the next pitch, but it was certainly something you don’t see every day. Not on the baseball field, at least.
