One of the top high school swimmers in Michigan is headed West. Madison Ensing, the defending Division 1 state champion in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in the state of Michigan signed with Arizona on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
The Zeeland, Mich., native Zeeland swimmer Madison Ensing signs with Arizona to swim for the Wildcats – a Power 4 program in the Big 12 – surrounded by her family, friend, coaches, teammates and teachers.
Madison Ensing is the third Holland, Michigan-area swimmer to join Arizona, following Eric Solis and Taylor Garcia.
But the Wildcats are much different with a new coaching staff.
Ben Loorz is the head swimming and diving coach for the Wildcats, who also have several strong assistant coaches, including Olympic champion Amanda Beard.
“My first call with them just excited me because when they ran through what a practice would look like, it was so unique in the way they trained. How they developed kids really intrigued me,” Madison Ensing said. “Then I went on my visit and I knew this was the place for me. It felt like home, which is a feeling you don’t get everywhere. The coaching staff and the team atmosphere is the most important thing. They had such a good dynamic that really drew me in.”
Ensing won the 50 freestyle in 22.94 as a junior, then claimed the title in the 100 freestyle with a swim of 50.11.
While she has focused on the sprints at the state meets, she would be a state title contender in nearly every event, making her an extremely versatile addition to the Wildcats.
