Maggie Wanezek, Brooke Corrigan Lead Wisconsin to Sweep of Minnesota
Maggie Wanezek and Brooke Corrigan won two races each as Wisconsin edged Minnesota, 160-140, in a Big Ten border battle in Minneapolis.
The Badgers swept the meet, with the men winning 177-117.
Corrigan led 1-2-3 results for the Badgers in both breaststroke events. Her time of 1:00.35 in the 100 breast edged Hazal Ozkan by .13 seconds., with Catherine Hughes third Corrigan’s time was a personal best that moved her into sixth place in program history.
In the 200, Corrigan went 2:09.62 to lead Bridget McGann and Ozkan with Hughes fourth. Corrigan swam on the 200 medley relay that prevailed in 1:36.46, with Wanezek, Hailey Tierney and Abby Wanezek.
Maggie Wanezek went 50.30 to win the 100 backstroke. Her time of 1:51.60 claimed the 200 back. Abby Wanezek won the 200 free in 1:45.70, then was second in the 200 free. Wisconsin capped the meet with a win in the 400 free relay in 3:14.51, the quartet of the Wanezeks, Blair Stoneburg and Tierney.
Maddie Waggoner won the 1,000 free for the Badgers in 9:38.19, with Stoneburg third. Stoneburg won the 500 free in 4:42.78 with Waggoner second. Waggoner was third in the 400 individual medley, with 200 fly champ Stella Chapman second.
Minnesota surged in the middle of the meet. Livi Wanner led a 1-2 result with Morgan Thomas in the 50 free, Wanner going 22.10. Elna Widerstrom won 1-meter diving with a score of 332.93, with teammate Viviana Del Angel Peniche second. (They flopped positions on 1-meter, with Del Angel Peniche scoring 361.88 to win). Mina Kaljevic, who had been third in the 200 free behind sister Anja Kaljevic, won the 100 free in 48.75, .03 ahead of Abby Wanezek, with Wanner third.
Thomas won the 100 fly in 52.21. Katie McCarthy went 4:10.85 to win the 400 IM after finishing second in the 1,000 free and third in the 500.
Dominik Mark Torok led Wisconsin with three individual wins. The Hungarian international went 1:41.93 to win the 200 fly, edging Minnesota’s Jacob Johnson by three tenths in a thrilling battle. Torok went 1:55.57 to win the 200 breast, then 3:45.03 to dominate the 400 IM.
Ben Wiegand was the other standout. His split of 19.19 on the end of the 200 medley relay made a difference, leading the squad of Nathan Welker, Brayden Henkel and Charlie Jones to victory in 1:25.99. Wiegand led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breast with a time of 53.52, then claimed the 50 free in 19.83, .04 ahead of teammate Cooper Scharff. Wiegand’s leadoff of 43.83 helped the Badgers go 2:53.74 to win the 400 free relay.
On that latter relay was Yoav Romano, who won the 1,000 free in 8:59.74 and the 500 in 4:18.86. Also in the quartet was Luukas Vainio, who won the 200 free in 1:34.37 and the 100 free in 44.22. Welker won the 100 back in 46.68.
Minnesota’s Johnson came back to win the 100 fly in 46.44, ahead of teammate Davide Harabagiu, who was also second in the 100 back. Andrew Bennett won both diving events.
