Neil Magny vs. Jake Matthews UFC Perth preview
Magny (30-13 MMA, 23-12 UFC) returned to the win column in his first fight of the year. In August, the UFC welterweight record holder in many categories picked up a second-round TKO stoppage of Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos. Sandwiched between his previous comeback victory over Mike Malott last January, were a pair of stoppage losses by the hands of rising stars Michael Morales and Carlos Prates. … Matthews (22-7 MMA, 15-7 UFC) appears to have found his stride again as he has put together a three-fight winning streak. His last such strech came in 2019-20. Matthews’ current run consists of decison wins over Phil Rowe and Francisco Prado, along with a submission of Chidi Njokuani.
Neil Magny vs. Jake Matthews UFC Perth expert pick, prediction
Filling out the main card is a welterweight matchup between Jake Matthews and Neil Magny.
Despite this fight having the widest betting line on the card attached to it, it still feels like a trickier call than it should be.
On one hand, Matthews hasn’t been the most consistent fighter from both an approach and results standpoint. However, in his last outing opposite Chidi Njokuani, Matthews appeared to finally be putting things in their proper places as far as his skills application goes.
Magny’s historic winning record at welterweight is nothing to scoff at, but it seems like his opponents’ mistakes rather than his own skills are what’s responsible for a large part of his wins as of late.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see a tight fight down the stretch, but I’ll side with Matthews to score a club-and-sub in Round 2.
