Manager rumors and candidates

This is a one-stop shop for the latest news and rumors surrounding potential manager/GM changes and candidates around MLB.

TEAMS WITH MANAGERIAL VACANCIES:

Previous manager: Bob Melvin

Latest: President of baseball operations Buster Posey will now have an opportunity to choose a manager for the first time since taking the job in 2024. Melvin was hired by the previous regime, led by president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, one year prior.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” Posey said in a statement. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.” (Sept. 29)

Previous manager: Rocco Baldelli

What happened: A season that began with playoff hopes gave way to a 70-win campaign — the franchise’s fewest in a non-shortened season since 2016 — and a Deadline sell-off. That led to the club dismissing Baldelli after seven seasons in charge.

Latest: Derek Falvey — then the Twins chief baseball officer — and former general manager Thad Levine hired Baldelli in 2018. Now the organization’s president of baseball and business operations, Falvey will lead the search for a new manager.

“This game is ultimately measured by results, and over the past two seasons we did not reach the goals we set,” Falvey said. “I take personal responsibility for that. After discussions with ownership, we determined that this is the right moment for a change in voice and direction.” (Sept. 29)

Previous manager: Bruce Bochy

What happened: After the Rangers went 81-81 in 2025, missing an AL Wild Card spot by six games, the club and Bochy agreed to end Bochy’s managerial tenure. Bochy was offered a front office-role to remain with the Rangers in an advisory capacity.

Latest: Then-Rangers general manager Chris Young hired Bochy out of retirement after the 2022 season, and the move quickly paid off when Bochy helped lead Texas to victory in the 2023 World Series. But the two seasons since have ended with the Rangers outside the AL postseason field looking in. Now, Young — now the Rangers’ president of baseball operations — has a chance to hire a new skipper to lead a team with a star-studded lineup and starting rotation.

“Bruce Bochy is one of the greatest managers in baseball history and he will forever hold a place in the hearts of Ranger fans after bringing home the first World Series title in franchise history in 2023,” Young said. “We are grateful for everything he has given to the organization over the past few seasons and hopeful he can continue to impact the Rangers for many years to come.”

Previous manager: Brandon Hyde (Tony Mansolino interim)

What happened: Amid a 15-28 start to the ’25 season, the Orioles relieved Hyde of his duties after he managed the team for parts of seven seasons, overseeing a drastic rebuild. Mansolino — the team’s third-base coach since 2021 — guided Baltimore to a 60-59 record the rest of the season as the interim skipper.

Latest: Speaking at his season-ending press conference on Sept. 29, Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said that the process of hiring a new manager will be initiated “imminently.” Elias said that Mansolino will be a “real candidate” for the role, but also noted that the organization will talk to other candidates in the search, too. (Sept. 29)

Previous manager: Dave Martinez (Miguel Cairo interim)

What happened: With the Nationals in the midst of their sixth straight losing season following their World Series title in 2019, the club parted ways with Martinez, as well as former general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo, on July 6. Cairo led the Nats to a 29-43 record as the interim skipper.

Previous manager: Bud Black (Warren Schaeffer interim)

What happened: After starting the year 7-33 — one of the worst 40-game starts in Major League history — the Rockies opted to move on from Black, a veteran skipper in his ninth season as the team’s manager. With third-base coach Warren Schaeffer serving as the interim manager, Colorado went 36-86 across their final 122 games.

Latest: Schaeffer — who called the team’s ’25 season “horrible” — is off to Scottsdale, Ariz., to work with prospects in the Rockies’ instructional program. (Sept. 28)
