The Yankees claimed infielder/outfielder Marco Luciano off waivers from the Orioles on Thursday.
The Giants had cut ties with their former prospect after he was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Dec. 5, but he was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh two weeks later. Baltimore claimed him on Jan. 7, but let him go last week.
Known for his electric bat speed and big right-handed pop, Luciano rose to become San Francisco’s No. 1 prospect and was featured on MLB Pipeline’s list of Top 100 prospects from 2020-24. But he didn’t pan out as expected after debuting with the Giants in 2023, batting .217 with a .590 OPS over 41 Major League games.
Luciano, 24, spent the entire 2025 season with Triple-A Sacramento in the San Francisco Giants organization, batting .214 (99-for-462) with 76R, 21 doubles, 1 triple, 23HR, 66RBI, 85BB and 10SB in 125 games. He appeared defensively in left field (107G/GS) and first base (1G/1GS). Over parts of six minor league seasons in the Giants system (2019, ’21-25), Luciano has batted .246 (455-for-1,848) with 326R, 86 doubles, 9 triples, 88HR, 297RBI, 302BB and 35SB over 500 games. He has appeared defensively in the minors at shortstop (294G/291GS), left field (107G/GS), second base (27G/GS) and first base (1G/GS).
