Two of Notre Dame’s biggest contributors have been missing a good amount of time and on Monday, head coach Marcus Freeman updated the plan for both of them the rest of this season.
For wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, Freeman said he’s “as close to being healthy as he’s been,” but that doesn’t mean that we will see him on the field this weekend against Syracuse or even next weekend in the regular season finale at Stanford. The plan was laid out as coach said “is it right for us to make him play these last two games and cost him a year… Right now, thats our mindset, if we don’t have to play him this week, let’s try not to. He’ll be ready, but we’re going to try and hold off on playing him in hopes of being able to redshirt him. … If we play beyond Stanford, he’ll be ready to go”

This isn’t something that we haven’t seen before, and it makes perfect sense for the Irish to try and persevere an extra season of eligibility for him. The redshirt rules along apply to the regular season, so even if a player is going to bank the season, they’ll still be able to play in the postseason, which is why we could see Greathouse in the College Football Playoff.
As for defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio, he’s been battling injuries the last two years, and it seems like Freeman wants to give him more time off as well. However, he did say that “if we are in postseason play, we expect Gabe Rubio to be ready for that.” That’s great news, for both players, as it looks like they’ll be ready to help Notre Dame try and make another run in the CFP.
