Marcus Smart has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign a two-year, $11 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smart will have a player option for the 2026-27 season to reenter free agency in 2027 when more teams have cap space.
Luka Doncic personally reached out to Smart to recruit him to the Lakers.
Smart made the playoffs in each of his first nine NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, but has been limited to just 54 games over the past two seasons due to injuries.
The Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks pursued Smart, who was granted permission to speak with teams.
The Lakers plan to waive Shake Milton to create Smart’s roster spot. Milton’s $3 million contract would have become fully guaranteed on Sunday.
