In the crucial Game 5 of the ALCS against the Blue Jays, the Mariners had a one-run lead but were also in plenty of trouble: bases loaded, no outs in the top of the fourth inning.
Mariners starter Bryce Miller handled the first one himself, striking out Daulton Varsho. But the bases were still loaded … until Ernie Clement hit a little dribbler that rolled mere inches from home plate. Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh pounced, picking up the ball with his knee on the plate for the first out. He then fired the ball to Josh Naylor at first for the inning-ending double play.
The winner of Friday’s Game 5 will grab a 3-2 edge in the ALCS before it heads back to Toronto for Game 6.
