Marquette Men’s Soccer Preview: at Providence

by

Marquette has played half their eight match Big East schedule for the year. They have four losses and just one goal scored in those four matches.

The two division winners make it to the Big East tournament. The next two best point totals after that join them. That means that Marquette and their zero points are nine points behind division leader Creighton with 12 possible points left in front of them. Seton Hall and St. John’s currently hold the wild card spots at eight and seven points.

This season is not mathematically over yet, but this is the line in the sand. If Marquette loses here, and Creighton beats Villanova, Seton Hall beats Akron, and St. John’s beat UConn, the Golden Eagles are officially out of the Big East tourney.

I’m not trying to slack off on these previews, but if you think I’m half-assing this one, wait til you see what I do next week if the Golden Eagles don’t come home from Rhode Island with three points.

Marquette is 4-11-4 all time against Providence. In terms of wins at least, this series has been all one way or another. MU didn’t get a W until the sixth all time meeting, which came in 2011, and then they picked up all four of their wins in a row. Thus: No wins since 2013, including last year’s lightning shortened 1-0 PC victory in Milwaukee.

Bruno Rosa, Sam Montalto, and Ian Abbey are your offensive leaders for the Friars. All three men are tied for the team lead in goals this season with three, and a trio of assists for both Rosa and Montalto have them 1) tied for the lead in that column and 2) tied for the team’s points lead with nine. Abbey leads the team in shots with 30 through 11 matches, and Montalto has been the most productive guy, putting up his nine points in just seven games and on just 10 shots. Montalto’s missed games were early in the season, and all three of his goals have been in Big East play.

It’s been almost all Ryan Carney in net this season for Providence, all but 13 minutes in PC’s 5-0 victory against Villanova. Carney has not been great, stopping just 67% of shots on goal and thus letting in 1.38 goals per 90 minutes of action. That’s a little surprising, as Providence is outshooting teams by nearly four attempts per game. It’s not like Carney is getting peppered heavily, and the Friars defense allows less than 45% of all shots as shots on goal. He’s just not making stops, which you’d think would be good news for Marquette’s scoring problems. However, we said the same thing about Butler and Augie Briscoe, and MU managed just one goal on 26 shots on their way to a loss.
