Watch out for sea turtles! Four species of sea turtles are feeding in our waters now, and too many are being killed by vessel strikes.
The most commonly seen species is the Loggerhead, which typically measure about 2 to 3 feet long. Loggerheads are varying shades of brown, and they often bask at the surface to rest. A Loggerhead at the surface can resemble a small patch of brown seaweed.
Other sea turtles you may encounter in Massachusetts include:
- Kemp’s Ridley turtle (critically endangered)
- Leatherback turtle (endangered)
- Green turtle (threatened)
Please watch ahead of your boat – don’t go on autopilot – and you might save a sea turtle’s life.
Additionally, please report turtle sightings to Mass Audubon’s sea turtle website for boaters: seaturtlesightings.org. It’s easy to report online, just complete this form. You can also report sightings by calling 1-888-Sea-Turt (1-888-732-8878).
Thanks and enjoy sharing the ocean!
