Mauricio Ruffy makes case for spot at UFC’s White House event

The list of fighters wanting to compete at the White House event keeps getting longer.

Mauricio Ruffy, a rising UFC lightweight contender, made his intentions clear and put his name in the hat following his recent bounceback win. Ruffy (13-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC), who was coming off his first UFC loss, scored a violent TKO over veteran Rafael Fiziev on the main card of Saturday’s UFC 325 in Sydney.

Immediately after getting his hand raised, the Brazilian picked up the microphone and shot his shot.

“Hunter (Campbell), Dana White, what do you guys think about putting me on the White House?” Ruffy said in Portuguese in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “You can put me against Paddy Pimblett or Conor McGregor. That’s for sure: I want Conor McGregor. I think I’m a lot better than Michael Chandler vs. Conor McGregor.”

After the fight, Ruffy showed up to the post-fight news conference wearing an arm sling. Despite the optics, Ruffy said he’s fine and that he’ll be ready for June 14, which is the date planned for the UFC White House event.

“The doctor is going to see what happened, and we’re going to do some exams here,” Ruffy told MMA Crazy and other reporters at the UFC 325 post-fight press conference. “It’s hurting a bit, but it will be 100 percent for the White House.”

UFC CEO Dana White has hyped up the White House event, saying it’s going to be one of the best cards in the promotion’s history. This is precisely why Ruffy thinks he should get a spot on the card. He promises to put on a show and perhaps another KO at the event.

“Three fights, two knockouts,” Ruffy said. “What do people want to see? What do the fans want to see? They want to see knockouts. Just put me on there, and we’ll make the crowd go wild.”
