Fried joined an exclusive fraternity of pinstriped pitchers to claim the hardware, following Ron Guidry (1982-86), Mike Mussina (2001, ’03, ’08) and Bobby Shantz (1957-60).
It was a standout season overall for Fried, 31, who stood tall as the Bombers’ ace by leading the Major Leagues with 19 victories while pacing qualified pitchers with a .792 winning percentage.
Owning the Yankees’ finest pickoff move since Andy Pettitte, Fried routinely showcased exceptional command and awareness on the mound, ready to field comebackers as well as surprise bunt attempts while controlling the running game with precision.
Fried led all Major League pitchers with 10 defensive runs saved, three more than anyone else, according to FanGraphs. He had seven pickoffs (including pickoff caught stealings), second most in the Majors behind Matthew Boyd’s 11, and led all pitchers with 39 assists.
