Micah’s 5 USC overreactions after Week 1 win

by

The Trojans could not have kicked off the season any better. If Week 1’s performance is a hint of how good the Trojans can be this season, we are sure in for a treat. It is hard not to get caught up in early victories, but who cares? College football is back and the Trojans look special.

Here are my 5 overreactions following the Trojans’ dominant victory in Week 1:

Jayden Maiava can be the best quarterback in the Big Ten this season

Out of all the quarterbacks in the Big Ten this weekend, Jayden Maiava looked the most impressive and sharp. Maiava put up 295 yards passing and 3 total touchdowns all in the first half. Maiava looked more comfortable and confident in the pocket in Game 1. Maiava knows he has a bunch of playmakers to get the ball to. His increased in efficiency on Saturday is very encouraging for the rest of the season. Maiava has everything he needs to put up the best quarterback season in the Big Ten this season. Saturday was just a hint for what will come this season for Maiava.

Husan Longstreet will be the next Heisman Trophy winner under Riley

It was not a perfect performance from the 5-star true freshman quarterback, but he showed enough to be excited about his future at USC. Longstreet was 9/9, had 123 total yards, and 3 total touchdowns. He showed a different level of athleticism, and elusiveness we haven’t seen yet in a Riley quarterback. When he gets the keys to this offense I think he will be the next star a Lincoln Riley coached quarterback.

The Trojans may have the best running back room in the country

This Trojans running back room is extremely deep full of versatile and talented backs. Former walk-on King Miller displayed the depth in this room with his 75-yard rushing touchdown saturday. There are many home run hitters in this backfield. Eli Sanders was also off to the races for a 73 yard receiving touchdown. You have Waymond Jordan who can break down defenses and make them pay. After three physical downs of Waymond Jordan coming down hill, then you can pitch to Eli Sanders or King Miller for a long touchdown. This backfield is simply impossible to stop.

The Trojans will have two 1,000-yard receivers

Makai Lemon had himself a day putting up 90 yards on 7 catches. Lincoln Riley did a phenomenal job scheming the Trojans playmakers open all game opening up many Trojans to score a big play touchdown. If that will be the case all season, the Trojans best playmakers — Lemon and Ja’Kobi Lane — will put up great numbers this season. Jayden Maiava also looked very decisive in the pocket operating perfectly in Riley’s scheme another factor benefiting the Trojans top receivers.

The Trojans could make the Big Ten Championship Game

Ohio State got an impressive win on this weekend, but to say it was a complete dominant performance would be an overstatement. The Trojans looked like they have the talent to hang with the best of the best in the Big Ten. With Notre Dame looking disappointing, the ceiling could be even higher than expected for the Trojans. Why can’t the Trojans beat the Buckeyes? Only one team in college football this week put up 73 points, that has to count for something, right? Regardless of who the opponent was this week, there has to be a lot of confidence and momentum brewing in the locker room. Momentum and confidence could lead to something special.
