ORLANDO, FL — Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed on ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Thursday, Jan. 1 that Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck would follow him from Salt Lake City to Ann Arbor before saying in so many words, there’s more where that came from.
About an hour later, news broke of U-M adding another trio of Utes coaches. The Wolverines are set to bring Utah wide receivers coach Micah Simon, quarterbacks coach/analyst Koy Detmer Jr. and tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham (brother of Kyle), according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

BUILDING A STAFF: Michigan football set to hire Jason Beck as offensive coordinator
Detmer Jr., son of former NFL quarterback Koy Detmer, likewise has worked with Beck at his past three stops, which included Syracuse before New Mexico and Utah
Freddie Whittingham, meanwhile, was always expected to follow his brother. It’s unclear if he will hold the same position, but he has a track record of elevating tight ends. Perhaps his most notable product is Dalton Kincaid, who became a first-round NFL draft pick and is now a standout for the Buffalo Bills.

That’s now five coaches on staff under Whittingham, including Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford who Whittingham opted to keep in the fold earlier this week. Alford’s late brother, Aaron, worked under Whittingham at Utah from 2007-10.
U-M has reportedly landed BYU defensive coordinator Jay Hill in the same position, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Michigan is trying to get its staff in place as quickly as possible, with the transfer portal nationwide set to open for two weeks on Friday.
