The Wolverines are trying to avoid a repeat of 2024 where inconsistent quarterback play was one of the reasons Michigan was not a Big Ten contender. Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong predicts the Wolverines are on the verge of landing a commitment from a consensus four-star quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class.

Weeks before the season begins, Wiltfong logged a prediction for Michigan to land Peter Bourque. ESPN ranks the Tabor Academy (Hingham, Mass.) prospect as the No. 3 rated quarterback in the 2027 recruiting class.

The only thing better for the Wolverines than landing a new signal-caller is potentially snagging a touted prospect away from a Big Ten rival. Among the top contenders for Bourque is the Penn State Nittany Lions, per On3.

“Michigan is in the lead group for many of the nation’s top quarterbacks in the 2027 class,” Wiltfong wrote on Saturday. “That includes No. 1 target Peter Bourque.

“As I continue to talk to sources regarding the Tabor Academy blue-chipper’s process, I love more and more where the Wolverines stand. With that I’ve logged a Rivals prediction for the Maize and Blue to ultimately land Bourque,” Wiltfong added.

“Things really picked up between the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Bourque and the Wolverines during the summer including a visit for camp.”

“Before anyone asks, it’s an open competition,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said on July 24, referencing the ongoing quarterback battle, per On3’s Brett McMurphy. “There is no starter. When they ‘have the team’ we’ll know we have our starter.”
