Midweek Musings – New Coach Philosophy

by

Penn State is in the middle of a head coaching search for the first time in over a decade, and I’m curious what everyone would like to see from the next head coach as far as philosophy goes.

Would you like to see someone who came up on the offensive side of the ball? Or would a former defensive coach be more to your liking.

Once they’re in place, what sort of schemes would you like to see out of the team?

Offensively, a ground and pound style offense geared around the run game, with the occasional TE/WR pass thrown in? More of an air raid offense that gets explosive passing plays, but can also pick up yards on the ground on 3rd and short? Pro style? RPO-based? Triple option?

Defensively, do you think Penn State should stick with a standard 4-3-4 setup? Maybe mix it up due to lack of depth at defensive tackle and have a 3-4-4? Lean in on the defensive backs and go 4-2-5? Would you rather see something like Manny Diaz’s chaos-causing blitz-a-thon that sometimes gets burned on 3rd and long? Or would you rather the defense keep everything in front of them, content to let plays happen underneath and make teams chip away at the entire length of the field to score?

Let me know your thoughts. Each of the candidates for head coach will have their own pluses and minuses, but if you could custom build a coach a la NCAA 2026, what would they look like?
