Milwaukee Juneau boys basketball star Dooney Johnson commits to Gonzaga University

by

Milwaukee Juneau star basketball player and prized 2027 Division-I prospect Dooney Johnson has committed to Gonzaga University, per his X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

Johnson is a top-30 prospect in ESPN’s top 2027 prospects (No. 28) and the first commitment for longtime head coach Mark Few for the 2027 class. He averaged 25.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, three assists and 2.5 steals per game for Juneau last season, leading to a Division 4 all-state selection as a sophomore. As a sophomore, Johnson tallied eight 30-point games, including 48 points in an 82-72 victory over Milwaukee King on March 1.

Before his commitment to the Zags, Johnson was being recruited by Cincinnati, Indiana, LSU, Marquette, Nebraska, Southern Methodist, Washington and Wisconsin among others in pursuit of the talented guard’s services.

According to ESPN college basketball reporter Myron Metcalf, the eligibility ruling of Tyon Grant-Foster played a factor in Johnson’s commitment to the Zags. Grant-Foster, the 2023-24 Western Athletic Conference player of the year at Grand Canyon, was awarded a preliminary injunction by a judge that will allow him to play for Gonzaga for the 2025-26 season.
