In its final tune-up before the start of the regular season, No. 10 Maryland women’s basketball showed a glimpse of what its nonconference slate may look like.

After falling to No. 9 NC State in its first exhibition, the Terps ended the preseason on a high note, massacring Point Park by 85 points, 120-35.

Despite missing key contributors Kaylene Smikle, Lea Bartelme and Bri McDaniel, Maryland had no issue overpowering its Division II opponent.

The Terps forced 41 turnovers on Thursday, and parlayed its defensive prowess into 66 points. Head coach Brenda Frese emphasized defense as one of this team’s major strengths compared to last season, and it was in full effect against the Pioneers.

“They play hard, like to wreak havoc,” Frese said. “We could have obviously pressed a lot more, but we weren’t going to do that.”

The Terps worked on their full-court press, something they weren’t able to implement last season.

Oluchi Okananwa led the Terps with 19 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field. Seven different players scored in double figures on Thursday. Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu had a double-double, notching 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Terps showcased their depth, too, as 11 different players found the scoresheet. This included 38 points from its redshirt and true freshmen.

Maryland shot lights out, shooting 60% from the field and 36% from deep. Yet, the Terps struggled from the charity stripe, going 15-of-23.

The Terps begin the regular season on Monday as they host Loyola Maryland.
