Mohsin Naqvi ACC impeachment inevitable, BCCI decides to..

by

The BCCI is reportedly set to initiate proceedings to impeach Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. The development has come as BCCI is yet to receive the Asia Cup trophy that Team India rightfully won last month.

India’s triumphant campaign in the continental championship ended controversially as Mohsin Naqvi bizarrely refused to hand the trophy to the winning team. It all started when the Suryakumar Yadav-led side refused to receive the trophy and the medals from Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the PCB chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister.

Asia Cup trophy still not handed over to India

The stand-off delayed the presentation ceremony for more than an hour. The ACC chairman was forced to walk off the podium. Asia Cup trophy was also carried off by an ACC official.

In the end, the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma received their individual awards from other dignitaries on stage. Team India, on the other hand, celebrated on the stage but without the trophy.

Later, Mohsin Naqvi took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify his stance, saying: “As ACC President, I was ready to hand over the trophy that very day and I am still ready now. If they truly want it, they are welcome to come to the ACC office and collect it from me.”

BCCI to push for Mohsin Naqvi’s removal

As the standoff between BCCI and Mohsin Naqvi continues, India Today has reported that the Indian board could move to initiate proceedings to impeach the PCB chairman from his role as ACC chairman. However, the BCCI is unlikely to press for his removal at this stage.

The Indian board is not willing to go all out against Naqvi in order to avoid unnecessary confrontation, particularly with the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup to be hosted by India on the horizon.

ICC action is also possible

The board officials want to avoid any administrative drama at this stage. However, the impeachment is still an option for the BCCI.

For the time being, the board is focused on the upcoming ICC board meeting, scheduled to take place from December 4 to 7 in Dubai.

BCCI plans to formally raise the issue during the meeting, seeking the ICC’s intervention to ensure the Asia Cup trophy is returned to the Indian team. The board’s next course of action will be decided by the outcome of the discussion at the ICC meeting.
