Mookie Betts on personal leave from Dodgers

BOSTON — ‘ return trip to Boston was delayed for at least one day as the Dodgers’ outfielder tends to a personal matter back home in Nashville, Tenn.

“I know there’s some things going on personally for him,” manager Dave Roberts said on Wednesday, before fully knowing Betts’ status. “There might be some things going on that he might not be around, that he’s got to deal with personally. Everything is OK with him, but yeah, we’ll see.”

Prior to kicking off the three-game set against the Red Sox on Friday night at Fenway Park, Roberts explained that he expects the eight-time All-Star to return for Saturday’s game and that Betts’ arrival time will likely decide his availability for that game.

“I think that he’ll be back tomorrow right around gametime,” Roberts said. “We’ll kind of see. He’s trying to make sure he gets back as soon as he can. I’m not sure if he’s going to be in the lineup, but he’ll be in town at some point.”

As for Friday night’s matchup, the Dodgers did not add a player to their roster in Betts’ absence and played with one short on the bench. Betts has struggled at the plate to date, hitting just .238 in 94 games.
