The Illinois high school football season got extended by a few days.

Finally on Wednesday night, it will conclude with the Class 8A IHSA championship game, which will pit Mount Carmel against Oswego.

The game is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. local time, although that could be delayed depending on the length of the Class 7A game beforehand.

The contest will be staged at Northern Illinois’ Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.

Mount Carmel enters the game ranked as the No. 1 team in the state of Illinois and carrying a 13-0 record.

In the state semifinals, Mount Carmel won 42-21 over Palatine Fremd.

Mount Carmel has won 16 state championships, and this time around, they’re going for a 4-peat.

Oswego comes in at 11-2 looking to pull the massive upset.

The Panthers beat Lockport Township in a narrow semifinal, 10-7, to get to this final game.

Oswego has won two state championships, first in 1992 and again in 2003.

MOUNT CARMEL 6, OSWEGO 3: 3RD QUARTER

THIRD QUARTER

– The second half is on the verge of getting underway. Mount Carmel will be kicking away to begin the third quarter.

HALFTIME

– Oswego is slated to receive the second half kickoff.

SECOND QUARTER

– The game gets to halftime with no more points. It’s 6-3 Mount Carmel halfway home. Second half should kick off about 7:55 p.m. local time.

– Mount Carmel gets a stop and gets the ball back at its own 42 with 56 seconds until halftime.

– Touchdown Mount Carmel. Emmett Dowling runs it on a keeper right up the middle form close range to give the Caravan the lead. The kick is blocked. The run was set up by a catch from four-star recruit Quentin Burrell down to the 1-yard line. (Mount Carmel 6-3, 1:30 2Q)

– A three-and-out for Oswego backed way up gives Mount Carmel the ball back at the plus-43 to start its next drive. There’s 4:23 until halftime for what could be a pivotal series.

– Yet another punt coming from Mount Carmel. Drive stalled with a personal foul penalty doing the big damage. Oswego getting it back with 6:08 left in the first half and a 3-0 lead. Punt pinned Oswego at the 1-yard line.

– Oswego drive halts at midfield. Punt goes into the end zone for a touchback. Scoreless with 7:18 left in the first quarter.

– Oswego comes out strong and forces a three-and-out. Mount Carmel punts it away to give Oswego the football.

– The final high school football game of the season in Illinois is underway. Mount Carmel received the opening kickoff.

PREGAME

– The game will kick off about 6:15 p.m.

– This game looks like it’ll begin after the scheduled 6 p.m. start time because of the length of the Brother Rice vs. St. Rita Class 7A game going on beforehand.

– Mount Carmel is trying to become the first football program in IHSA history to four-peat on two separate occasions, according to WGN.
