If the season ended today, Joe Lunardi of ESPN would have the Spartans as a top three seed in the NCAA Tournament.
We are still months away from the NCAA Tournament, but it’s never too early to take a peek at how the field of 68 is shaping up. As he does every week, Lunardi has released an updated batch of bracketology — which has the Spartans near the top of country.

In this week’s projection, Lunardi has Michigan State as a No. 3 seed in the South Region. The Spartans are projected to play No. 14 seed Siena in a first round matchup in Buffalo. Should the Spartans win this projected matchup, they would face the winner of No. 6 seed Auburn and No. 11 seed Seton Hall / VCU (play-in game winner).
Michigan State is off to a strong start this season, with an 8-1 record. The Spartans lost their first game of the season this past weekend in a top 10 showdown against Duke, and will next take the court at Penn State on Saturday.
My Thoughts
It’s hard to get too worked up about a NCAA Tournament bracket projection in early December, but I think it’s fair to say this is actually one seed line too low for the Spartans. Not many teams have as many marquee wins as the Spartans so far this season — although that win over Kentucky has lost its luster, which is most likely hurting Michigan State here. I personally would swap the Spartans with No. 2 seeds Gonzaga or BYU, but, again, this is not something I’m too worried about with Selection Sunday three months away.
