Italy will play for a Davis Cup three-peat without its top two singles stars.

Lorenzo Musetti confirmed he has withdrawn from next week’s Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna. Musetti, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in his final ATP Finals round-robin match yesterday, joins world No. 2 Jannik Sinner who had previously pulled out of the Davis Cup competition.

Musetti cited fatigue from his extended play to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin—he played Athens and reached the final last Saturday losing to Novak Djokovic in a marathon match—and the fact his long-time partner Veronica is pregnant and expecting the couple’s second child as his primary reasons for withdrawing.

“Given my physical condition and my family situation, in agreement with captain Filippo Volandri, I have decided not to participate in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna,” said Musetti. “Obviously, there is a lot of regret and disappointment for how I came into this competition. With a better approach, perhaps I would have tried to play it, despite the family commitment.

“I knew that physical fatigue was difficult to shake off after the battles of the last few months, and especially the last few weeks, in one day.”

Wimbledon winner Sinner has led Italy to the Davis Cup championship in each of the last two years.
