Before rain swept in and delayed the MLB Speedway Classic on Aug. 2, players from the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves were introduced to the field in a unique way to signify MLB’s partnership with NASCAR.
A NASCAR pit crew aided both teams’ entrance to the field at Bristol Motor Speedway next to two NASCAR cars branded with Reds and Braves logos. Pit stop flags with each starter’s number were also flashed as each player was introduced.
MLB brought out the effects for its first-ever game at a NASCAR venue. The game, which is also expected to be the most-attended game ever, is also the first-ever MLB matchup in the state of Tennessee.
Chase Burns and Spencer Strider, who both grew up and played high school baseball in Tennessee, were the scheduled to start the game. However, the game is in a rain delay.
There were also two first pitches thrown in the opening ceremonies, each by a legendary player from each team. The Reds were represented by catcher Johnny Bench and the Braves were joined by third baseman Chipper Jones. Both players are in the Hall of Fame.
Fans are assuredly hoping the rain can soon wash away, so unique festivities like the pit crew member introductions can resume at Bristol Motor Speedway.
