NEW YORK — Their issues with runners in scoring position had reached notorious levels for a second straight game, but the Red Sox got a game-breaking hit from their youngest player when the occasion called for it.
Roman Anthony continues to show that his lack of experience isn’t an impediment. The 21-year-old bashed a towering two-run homer to right in the top of the ninth to give his team some breathing room in a 6-3 win in Thursday night’s opener of a four-game rivalry series at Yankee Stadium.
Anthony belted a game-tying RBI single to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth. In the seventh, Nathaniel Lowe — making his second start for the Red Sox — roped an RBI double into the right-center-field gap to give his team the lead for good.
That was two innings after Lowe tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to center.
Before Lowe’s double, the game went back and forth, as neither team looked sharp.
While the Red Sox went 3-for-19 with runners in scoring position while leaving 14 on base, the Yankees committed four errors.
The game went back and forth for most of the night, neither team looking particularly crisp. The Yankees made three errors in the second inning. But David Hamilton was picked off third in that same inning, and Boston scored just one run.
Lucas Giolito grinded to keep the Red Sox in the game, but was far from his best, allowing five hits and three runs while throwing 97 pitches in 4 2/3 innings.
