National analyst still high on MSU basketball after Duke loss

Michigan State basketball lost its first game of the season this past weekend, but that doesn’t appear to lower the expectations of the Spartans for one national analyst.

As he does essentially every day, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports posted his updated rankings — which still have the Spartans near the top of the list. Rothstein had the Spartans come in at No. 7 in the country in his updated poll released on Sunday — which is only one spot lower than the day prior.

Michigan State came up short late in a top 10 battle with Duke on Saturday afternoon, with the Blue Devils picking up the 66-60 win over the Spartans at the Breslin Center. This was the first loss of the season for Michigan State and was certainly disappointing for the Spartans despite a strong effort.

Michigan State is 8-1 overall on the year will be off until Saturday when they travel to Penn State. The Spartans are also 1-0 in Big Ten play so far this year.

The slight drop in Rothstein’s rankings isn’t surprising and lines up with many who believe Saturday’s loss to Duke is no reason for concern. There’s still plenty of season remaining and it’s clear Michigan State can play with the best of the country, and it’s clear Rothstein agrees with that statement too.
