NCAA names former Bradley Braves opponent in gambling investigation

by

PEORIA — A former San Francisco Dons player was named by the NCAA on Wednesday in allegations he provided information on his statistics for upcoming games to help a player on another team make prop bets last season, according to an ESPN story.

Dons starting guard Marcus Williams, who started 31 games last season, including one against the Bradley Braves, was ruled ineligible by the NCAA last spring ahead of the West Coast Conference tournament.

The NCAA now alleges Williams provided information ahead of at least nine games regarding his statistics to former Fresno State player Mykell Robinson, and that Robinson placed bets on those statistics.

The NCAA says it found text messages on Robinson’s phone that showed Williams shared information with Robinson about his points, 3-pointers made, rebounds and assists.

Bradley’s Demarion Burch makes a move on San Francisco’s Marcus Williams in the second half of their college basketball game Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024 at Carver Arena. The Braves defeated the Dons 66-64.

In each instance, Williams directed Robinson to take the over on his statistics, according to the NCAA.

It is unknown in which nine games Williams is alleged to have assisted Robinson with his prop bets. Williams played for San Francisco from the 2022-23 season through 2024-25.

In the Dec. 18 game against Bradley, Williams played 32 minutes, produced 18 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. He shot 6 of 17 from the field and 4 of 9 from 3-point range.

The starting guard had eight games with at least 20 points in his 31 outings last season.

Paolo Zamorano, Williams’ agent, told ESPN his client has never bet on a college basketball game or his own performance.

The NCAA has ruled more than a dozen players ineligible from eight schools because of betting violations this year.
