Nick Kyrgios says if it comes to him having to play the Australian Open qualifying event, he will do so.
Two weeks before the start of the Australian Open, the Happy Slam organizers have handed out five out main draw wildcards for men's singles.
Kyrgios, who currently sits at No. 671 in the world and doesn't have a protected ranking anymore, hasn't yet received a wildcard. And since only three more wildcards have been left to be given, it is unclear whether the 2022 Wimbledon finalist will be picked.
Over the last couple of days, there has been a lot of talk about what the former world No. 13 would do if he was only granted an Australian Open qualifying wildcard.
Speaking with reporters ahead of his opening tournament of the year at the Brisbane International – for which he was given a wildcard – the 30-year-old was directly asked if he would be willing to play qualies at Melbourne Park.
Kyrgios: I guess… Yeah
"I guess potentially, yeah. I mean, as I said, like this, my short-term goal is to get through my doubles with one of my mates that I grew up with, and he's had success here, won doubles here. I have won this tournament. Hence that's why we got a wildcard," the seven-time ATP champion answered.
"I'm just going to get through this week first. And whatever AO brings, AO brings. That's two weeks away. I don't know what could happen between now and then. As an athlete, like yourself, obviously you know so many things can change. Yeah, I'll just take it day by day."
Kyrgios may not have received a singles wildcard yet, but he is set to play doubles at Melbourne Park with Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Australian was referencing to that in the comments above.
Meanwhile, if Kyrgios does end playing in the Australian Open qualifying, that will mark his first Grand Slam qualifying appearance since the 2013 US Open.
