Former New Mexico State women’s basketball player Anita Maxwell has been named as part of the 2025 New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame class.
Now Anita Skipper, she’s regarded as one of the best athletes to ever play for the Aggies. Referred to by the university as “arguably the greatest women’s basketball player ever at NM State”, Skipper played for the Aggies from 1992-96. She was a three-time Big West Conference Player of the Year and currently holds several school records, including for most career points at 2,601.

Skipper was the first Division I college basketball player, men or women, to have at least 2,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 steals in a college career. She was also a three-time honorable mention Kodak All-American and was inducted into the NM State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Cleveland Rockers selected Skipper with the 29th pick in the 1997 WNBA College Draft, and she played nine games for them before embarking on a three-year career overseas. Her No. 40 jersey has been retired by NM State.

Skipper will be inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, at The Pit in Albuquerque.
