No. 2 Hurricanes looking to future, not to program’s trash-talking past

TALLAHASSEE — Hurricanes wide receiver CJ Daniels put Miami ahead of rival Florida State with a short touchdown pass in the first quarter on Saturday night.

He celebrated with some dance moves, and when the camera approached him, he had some fun. Daniels, playing in his first Miami-FSU game, mocked the Seminoles’ war chant. When he scored again in the third quarter of the No. 2 Hurricanes’ win, he did it a second time.

Daniels, who was also wearing a tribute to his late teammate at LSU, Kyren Lacy, on his eye black, he said after the game that he probably should have tempered his excitement.

“I could have controlled my emotions a little more,” Daniels said. “I think I let my emotions get the best of me.”

But the celebratory trash talk harkened back to an era of Miami football when the Hurricanes were better than everyone and were happy to tell people.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal was a part of those teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But he said he is not encouraging players to badmouth opponents.

“I know I’ve said it before: If you cut me open, I’m orange and green, bleeding all over the place,” Cristobal said. “And it was a time in football that will never, ever be matched again, in my opinion. We were crazy as can be wild. … I didn’t belong on the field with those talented guys.

“But we are moving forward. We’re not going back. We’re not. We’re taking the principles and values of all those awesome teams: the physicality of those teams, the playmaking ability, the togetherness, the brotherhood of those teams, and going forward and pushing Miami football to modern-day football. … But no, I don’t encourage that stuff. We’re not watching 80s and 90s film.”
