Notre Dame QB competition: CJ Carr, Kenny Minchey are ‘neck-and-neck’ originally appeared on The Sporting News
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish have a lot of unanswered questions leading up to their series-opening matchup against Miami on Aug. 31.

After last year’s quarterback, Riley Leonard, had to take the next steps in his football career and declare for the 2025 NFL Draft, Notre Dame is still looking for their next starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
With the kickoff to the Notre Dame football season less than three weeks away, the competition has come down to two names: redshirt freshman CJ Carr and redshirt sophomore Kenny Minchey.
“One source told On3 this past week that it is neck-and-neck with no clear separation. Minchey has the most college experience and more experience practicing in Mike Denbrock’s system with Carr sidelined last year, and that could prove to be a difference-maker when Marcus Freeman makes a decision,” said On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos.
If experience were the deciding factor between the two, Minchey, from Hendersonville, Tennessee, has the advantage, but not by a convincing margin. The redshirt sophomore has more years under his belt than Carr, but that doesn’t make up for much, as he only has three pass attempts and two rushes in his career.

Carr, a four-star 2024 recruit from Saline, Michigan, is in his second year in Notre Dame’s program. The son of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, he’s gotten encouraging words from College Gameday’s Kirk Herbstreit, saying that he’s “super-high” on the redshirt freshman.
Whether the answer is going to be Kenny Minchey or CJ Carr, the final decision will be coming in the next couple of weeks, before Notre Dame’s quest to make it back to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
