Notre Dame Sweeps Miami Invitational Championships

The Miami (Ohio) Invitational concluded on Saturday as fast swims turned into titles, both individual and team.

Notre Dame won the men’s meet with 1,778 points, holding off Indianapolis (1,684), Miami (1,501), Ouachita Baptist (934) and Valparaiso (588).

The Fighting Irish also won the women’s meet with 1,628 points. Host Miami was second (1,586), followed by Indiana State (1,101), Marshall (1,037.5), Indianapolis (761), Illinois State (548.5), Ouachita Baptist (110) and Valparaiso (110).

Here is a look at the final day:

Women’s 1650 Free

Indiana State freshman Grace Cummings swam to victory in the 1650 free, getting to the wall in 16:23.09, going 1-2-4 with teammates Claire Parsons (16:34.29) and Maria Saldana Riebeling (16:49.27).

Third place went to Miami’s Gracie Gregory (16:45.71).

Notre Dame’s Alyssa Street finished fifth (16:51.36), followed by Miami’s Casey Stephens (16:53.81) and Sarah Pophal (16:54.30) and Notre Dame’s Ava Pape (16:59.41).

Men’s 1650 Free

Indy’s Swann Plaza continued his great meet with a win in the 1650 free. He finished in 14:55.99.

Miami’s Elijah Rolfsen took second in 15:21.47, followed by Notre Dame’s Sean Atkinson (15:20.36), Indy’s William Pettifer (15:37.50), Notre Dame’s Luke Bucaro (15:37.93) and Charlie Mayr (15:45.32), Ouachita Baptist’s Tyler Andruss (15:50.71) and Indy’s Emmett Shank (15:52.30).

Women’s 200 Backstroke

Notre Dame’s Emily Hamill dropped three seconds from prelims to take the win in the 200 back in 1:53.91, nearly a second ahead of the field.

Miami’s Chrisna Bezuidenhout took second in 1:54.67, followed by teammates Ella Ziegert (1:58.28) and Piper Prince (1:58.85).

Marshall’s Kseniia Luniushina was fifth (1:58.91), followed by teammate Mia McBride (1:59.87) and Indiana State’s Anna Asplund (2:00.57).

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Notre Dame made is a backstroke sweep on Saturday as Evan Conti won the men’s 200 back in 1:42.92.

Miami’s Jensen Nelsen was second in 1:43.30 and Notre Dame freshman Zack Oswald was third in 1:43.86.

Ouachita Baptist’s Stefan Duca was fourth (1:45.07), followed by Indy’s Jokubas Jankauskas (1:45.72), Notre Dame’s Brady Calkins (1:46.77), Owen Tharrington (1:47.61) and Luke Bucaro (1:47.65), who made the top eight after swimming the mile.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Notre Dame made it three wins in a row as Hollie Widdows kept up her strong week by winning the 100 free in 48.24, dropping nearly a second from prelims.

Marshall’s Elyse Wood was second in 49.61, ahead of a pair of Fighting Irish – Kate Simon (50.07) and Lente Geelen (50.10).

Illinois State’s Malia Snow was fifth in 50.11, followed by Miami’s Julia Waechter (50.13) and Kaylin Herbet (50.25) and Indiana State’s Erin Cummins (50.96).

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Notre Dame’s Shane Eckler won the 100 free in 42.39, leading a 1-2-4-5 finish for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame’s Jeremy Kelly tied Indy’s Zachary Anthony for second in 43.98. Min-Gyo Jang was fourth (44.00) and Hrvoje Tomic was fifth (44.03).

Miami’s Duncan Salmen was sixth in 44.12, followed by teammate Ian Rodrigues Kmiliauski (44.13) and Oauchita Baptist’s Sam Ragsdell (44.50).

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Gracie Lanning made it five in a row for UND as she won the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.87.

Indy’s Celina Schmidt was second in 2:12.90, followed by Miami’s Madison Watschke (2:14.55), Notre Dame’s Julieta Tracy (2:14.75), Indiana State’s Ali Pearson (2:15.22), Marshall’s Isabelle Cameron (2:16.89), Notre Dame’s Mary Codevilla (2:17.4) and Marshall’s Madelyn Akin (2:17.46).

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Six in a row for the Fighting Irish as Jack Armour won the 200 breaststroke in 1:53.80, dropping more than four seconds from his prelims time.

Indy’s Jeremias Pock finished second in 1:54.04, followed by another Notre Dame freshman, Gus MacDonald (1:57.53).

Miami’s Pablo Silva was fourth in 1:58.56, followed by Indy’s Sawyer Lehman (2:00.26), Valparaiso’s Gabe Vasquez (2:03.49) and Ouachita Baptist’s Justin Oulette (2:04.00).

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Notre Dame’s Lainey Mullins made it seven wins in a row for the Irish, claiming the 200 butterfly in 1:57.36, more than two seconds ahead of the field.

Teammate Emily Kitayama was second in 1:59.87, followed by Marshall’s Lauren McNamara (2:00.03) and Molly Warner (2:01.93).

Indiana State’s Haley Halsall was fifth (2:02.53), ahead of Ouachita Baptist’s Anna Phelps (2:03.03), Miami’s Gracie Gregory (2:04.31) and Indiana State’s Sophia Diaz (2:04.67).

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Eight in a row as Patrick Branon won the men’s 200 butterfly 1:43.48, going 1-2 with fellow Irishman Dillon Edge (1:44.85).

Miami’s Owen Hoban took third in 1:46.01, followed by teammate Michal Piela (1:47.30), Notre Dame’s Charlie Heisig (1:48.29), Notre Dame’s Sammy Sierra (1:48.34), Indy’s Sebastian Aguilar (1:49.83) and Notre Dame’s Charlie Mayr (1:52.34), completing a double.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

The Irish put the exclamation point on the meet with a win in the 400 free relay. Hollie Widdows, Kate Simon, Becky Rentz and Lente Geelen won in 3:18.58.

Miami’s Jenna Halliday, Kaylin Herbet, Natalie Gilson and Julia Waechter took second in 3:21.57.

Marshall’s Elyse Wood, Kseniia Luniushina, Nina Nugent and Molly Warner took third in 3:22.80.

Men’s 400 Free Relay

Notre Dame’s Shane Eckler, Min-Gyo Jang, Jeremy Kelly and Jack Armour won in 2:53.21.

The Notre Dame B squad finished second with Hvroje Tomic, Dillon Edge, Zach Oswald and Patrick Branon (2:55.60).

Indy took third with Elias Noe, Swann Plaza, Zachary Anthony and Jeremias Pock finishing in 2:56.20.
