Notre Dame Victorious at Tim Welsh Classic
The Tim Welsh Classic took place at Notre Dame Friday and Saturday, with the Fighting Irish coming out on top. The women’s team scored 1114.5 points to beat out Illinois (886), Akron (824) and Indiana State (644.5) while the Notre Dame men were the only team competing (1247 points).
Notre Dame’s women won the 200 free relay in 1:30.55 with a team of Hollie Widdows, Becky Rentz, Kate Simon and Grace Brenneman. Later, the team of Emily Hamill, Mary Codevilla, Carli Cronk and Widdows dominated the 400 free relay with a time of 3:35.44. Notre Dame’s Calie Brady won 3-meter diving (307.70).
Cronk blasted a time of 4:08.80 in the 400 IM to win convincingly while Widdows won the 100 butterfly in 52.95. Mary Codevilla was the winner of the 100 breaststroke (1:01.55). Cronk, Widdows, Rentz and Hamill put up a time of 7:11.62 in the 800 free relay.
Widdows won a second event Saturday with a top showing in the 100 free (48.72), and Grace Lanning was victorious in the 200 breast (2:13.12). Cronk swam a time of 1:55.28 as she dominated the 200 fly while Ellie Lee won 1-meter diving (312.25). Widdows, Cronk, Rentz and Hamill finished off the meet with a 400 free relay win, clocking 3:18.07.
Akron’s Ada Szwabinska won the 50 free (22.29). In the afternoon session, Martyna Piesko, Claire Cox, Callie Parkes and Szwabinska combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:39.53. Helena Lalkovic placed first in the 200 free (1:47.83), and Piesko led an Akron 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke in 53.48. Piesko added a first-place finish Saturday in the 200 back (1:55.90).
Indiana State picked up a win in the 500 free from Grace Cummings (4:47.90), and Cummings returned Saturday to win the 1000 free (9:46.97). Illinois’ Sara Jass took first in the 200 IM (2:00.83)
On the men’s side, Notre Dame was the only team competing. Shane Eckler, Marcus Reyes-Gentry, Tommy Janton and Jeremy Kelly won the 200 medley relay in 1:19.04. Gus MacDonald topped the 500 free (4:22.60), and the 200 IM went to Dillon Edge (1:45.49). Hvroje Tomic was first in the 50 free (20.12), and the team of Reyes-Gentry, Jack Armour, Edge and Eckler clocked 3:08.25 in the 400 medley relay.
For the Friday afternoon session, Reyes-Gentry, Armour, Edge and Eckler went 1:25.43 in the 200 medley relay before MacDonald (400 IM, 3:50.86), Eckler (100 fly, 46.23) and Patrick Branon (200 free, 1:36.03) reeled off wins. Armour was the lone competitor in the 100 breast (53.60) while Zack Oswald topped the 100 back (47.20). In the 800 free relay, Eckler, Branon, Jeremy Kelly and Edge finished in 6:23.76.
The meet concluded with Janton putting up a strong time of 1:40.64 in the 200 back. Min-Gyo Jang won the 100 free (43.61), followed by Armour winning the 200 breast (1:57.09) and a tie between Edge and Branon in the 200 fly, with both swimmers going 1:45.00. In the 400 free relay, Eckler, Reyes-Gentry, Janton and Kelly combined for a time of 2:52.58.
