Notre Dame Wants To Have It Both Ways And That’s Not Going To Work

by

Notre Dame A.D. Pete Bevacqua is apparently upset that the ACC pushed Miami in the College Football Playoffs at the expense of Notre Dame. We’re sure he’s a good man, but respectfully: why in the world would the ACC push Notre Dame football when it is not an ACC football team?

Frankly, it’s kind of ludicrous.

Look, everyone understands that the Irish value their independence and want to stay that way in football, and only football.

They want to be in a conference for everything else though. In particularly, they want a strong conference for men’s and women’s basketball.

In football though, Notre Dame is a powerful national brand and, uniquely, they have the power to remain independent and to be not just relevant but a major force.

When push comes to shove however, the ACC is going to push ACC football teams. Why?

Because the ACC does not profit from Notre Dame’s football success. Only Notre Dame does.

So that’s the basic nature of the deal: in all the other sports, the ACC will promote Notre Dame but in football, the ACC will promote ACC teams. It’s not complicated.

If Notre Dame wants the ACC to promote Notre Dame football, it should join the ACC in football. Otherwise, as they have so often made clear, when it comes to football, they’re on their own. It’s the deal they struck and it would be the same in any conference.
