Notre Dame women’s basketball dominant in ACC opener vs Florida State

by

After blowing a 19-point lead in an ACC/SEC Women’s Basketball Challenge game to No. 13 Ole Miss Thursday, No. 18 Notre Dame had about as encouraging of a response as it gets Sunday, Dec. 7.

The Fighting Irish went into Tallahassee for an ACC opener, albeit against a previously 4-6 Florida State team, and beat the Seminoles 93-58 for Notre Dame’s largest-ever margin of victory against its conference foe.

Cassandre Prosper, a senior who led the Irish with 21 points, embodied what had to be an aggressive start to the game for Notre Dame by scoring the first four points of the contest. She was held to just two points in the Irish’s loss to the Rebels three days prior.

“I capitalized on my mismatches; I felt like that was the biggest thing,” Prosper said.

On defense, Prosper held sophomore Sole Williams, the Seminoles’ leading scorer with 16.9 points per game, to just nine points on 4-for-22 (18.2%) shooting.

Before Florida State knew it, Notre Dame got out to a 20-0 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter. However, the Seminoles then switched to zone defense that allowed the home team to go on a 27-9 run across the next 9:29 that cut the Irish’s lead to just 29-27.

Without a timeout to catch its breath, Notre Dame quickly had to look itself in the mirror and decide what the rest of the day was going to look like. Would the Irish be upset by Florida State for the second year in a row, or were they going to remind the ACC that they are still planning to be a threat in a top-heavy conference despite a new-look roster?

Notre Dame chose the latter, ending the first half with a 12-0 run and never looking back. Head coach Niele Ivey knew this game was going to be critical in setting the tone for what the Irish could look like in the ACC after co-leading the conference last season.

Sending a message with a 35-point victory on the road was particularly important after Thursday’s loss.

“Had a rough couple of days,” Ivey said. “… They were ready today. It was a response.”

While Prosper led the Irish with 21 points, four others joined her with double-digit scoring figures. Wake Forest grad transfer Malaya Cowles was perhaps most impressive with a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double off Notre Dame’s bench.

Cowles missed the first two games of the season after a “clean-up” procedure in her knee during the offseason, and she has ramped back up to speed on a game-by-game basis. Cowles fouled out of Notre Dame’s last game against Ole Miss, but she dropped 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

“I’m feeling great,” Cowles said. “I’m definitely starting to get back to myself. That feels amazing.”

Also excelling off the bench against Florida State was Vanderbilt grad transfer Iyana Moore, who had her best game with Notre Dame as well. She, too, missed the first two games of the season with a “nagging” injury.

Moore hit five 3-pointers en route to 19 points against the Seminoles, and her success from beyond the arc will be key for an Irish team who shoots just 30% from 3-point land as a whole.

Junior standout Hannah Hidalgo was typically great, though her all-around performance flew a bit under the radar against Florida State. She put up 17 points and neared a triple-double with seven rebounds and nine assists to go along with her season-low two steals.

Finally, Kansas State grad transfer Gisela Sanchez rounded out Notre Dame’s five players in double figures with 12 points in just 15 minutes.

The Irish now look at a six-game stretch of very winnable games before facing No. 11 North Carolina in mid-January. The only quality opponent on deck prior to the 9-2 Tarheels is a Sunday, December 14 road trop James Madison (8-3), which boasts Power-5 wins against Wisconsin, Boston College and Virginia Tech so far.

But next on 6-2 Notre Dame’s horizon is a home contest against Morehead State (3-5) this Thursday, December 11, at 7 p.m.
