Serbian tennis player, Novak Djokovic, qualified for the second round of the Australian Open, as he defeated the Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the first round today in Melbourne with a score of 6:3, 6:2, 6:2.
With this triumph, the Serbian tennis player reached his 100th victory at the Australian Open. He won 101 times at Roland Garros, 102 at Wimbledon, and 95 at the US Open.
The match between Djokovic and Martinez lasted two hours. Djokovic is currently ranked fourth in the world, while Martinez is 71st in the ATP rankings.
This match was specific in many ways, and Novak Djokovic scored a total of 49 winners, including a jumping forehand winner that was recorded at 176 kilometers per hour.
At the press conference, Djokovic referred to that winner, saying that it reminded him of Monfils.
Namely, the Serbian tennis player was smiling after that shot, somewhat impressed with his skills.
“I actually thought of Monfils. That’s why I smiled,” said Novak.
Novak Djokovic explains his shot
When asked by the reporter to describe the shot, he pointed out that such things do not need to be explained too much – he simply connected the shot well, while Monfils performed similar moves many times during his career.
"There’s nothing much to talk. In addition to that because I connected well, and I didn’t hit too many of those in my career, but Gael did.
We’ve seen him so many times in highlights. When I did that, he crossed my mind first. I was like, Now I know how he feels (smiling). Yeah, it felt good, definitely.”- he continued.
Novak is now focused on the next challenge, aware that winning the next round opens up many possibilities for him and that it will be an important injection of confidence.
Italian Francesco Maestrelli awaits him in the next round, and this will be their first meeting.
