November Internationals – England vs Argentina – ARN Guide

by

England and Argentina clash at Twickenham Stadium in London on Sunday. The clash marks the final fixture of the year for both teams. It has been a successful year for both as England and Argentina are both assured of being seeded in the top Band for Rugby World Cup 2027.

England’s year opened with an away defeat against Ireland in Dublin. Since then, the Steve Borthwick coached team has gone unbeaten in test matches but did lose an uncapped match between England XV and France XV.

Argentina entered November under pressure. Felipe Contepomi’s side claimed wins over New Zealand and Australia in the Rugby Championship as well as beating the British & Irish Lions in June but the team fell to a heavy loss against South Africa in Durban.

The teams faced-off at the pool stage in the past two Men’s Rugby World Cups but they will not do so in Australia 2027. Instead, England and Argentina join South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland and France in Band A for the draw which will be made in less than two weeks time, on December 03.

  • Having beaten Wales and Scotland on tour so far, an Argentine victory in London would see Los Pumas completing an unbeaten three-match November tour for the first time in their history.
  • It is Los Pumas’ first away match against England in three years. Argentina won there last time 30-29.
  • England defeated Argentina in La Plata and San Juan in July. It was during the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia. Felipe Contepomi rested Top 14 players ahead of the Rugby Championship.
  • England welcome Elliot Daly back for the first time in November. He suffered a broken arm playing for the British & Irish Lions against Super Rugby side the Queensland Reds in the July Internationals. Daly replaces Tom Roebuck who is out with a foot injury.
  • Henry Slade comes in at outside centre for Ollie Lawrence who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.
  • Tomás Albornoz is back for Argentina for the first time since the Rugby Championship.
  • Santiago Chocobares has been rested after a busy season to have a full recovery. He had minor dizziness two days after after facing Scotland.
  • England’s team features three foriegn-born players: flanker, Sam Underhill, utility back Marcus Smith and winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso. Underhill and Smith moved to England as children and are homegrown players. Feyi-Waboso is not homegrown. He is from Cardiff, Wales and qualifies via a grandparent who was born in Gloucester, England.
  • Argentina’s 23 players are all Argentine born and homegrown.
  • All 23 of England’s players playing the English Premiership.
  • 10 of Argentina’s 23 players play in the English Premiership: Simón Benítez Cruz (Newcastle Red Bulls), Santiago Carreras (Bath), Juan Martín González (Saracens), Santiago Grondona, Matías Moroni, and Pedro Rubiolo (Bristol Bears), Pedro Delgado, Rodrigo Isgró, Guido Petti and Boris Wenger (Harlequins).
  • The match will be refereed in English by Frenchman Pierre Brousset. His match official colleagues are from France, Georgia, Italy and Scotland.

Winter is settling in England. Preparation for Sunday’s test match saw training sessions with no shortage of cold rain and more is forecast in the lead-up to the game and on match-day itself. It remains to be seen whether the teams will adjust their styles to adapt to the conditions or not. England have perhaps the world’s best fly half for such conditions in George Ford. Los Pumas know very well that he likely a drop-goal. Argentina’s enterprising play thus far in November, and outstanding comeback at Murrayfield will only add to the unknown action that awaits those in attendance at Twickenham Stadium. England are favorites to win in London.
