Four games do not a season make, but with the quarter pole of the college football regular season now in the rearview mirror, we are starting to get an idea of what the best teams in the country for 2025 are, as we see more and more separation.
If you are an Ohio State fan — and likely if you are not begrudgingly — it’s become pretty clear that this remade Buckeye squad still has a lot of talent and is among the best in the country. In fact, according to the major polls, OSU is ranked No. 1 after wins against Texas in Week 1 and on the road vs. Washington this past week. Ohio State has been atop the two major polls since beating the Longhorns in the season opener.

But not all media members are completely sold on the Buckeyes. Take USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg, for instance. He hasn’t had Ohio State at the top of his re-rank column that he publishes after every week of the college football calendar, even after the win over Texas. He’s had Georgia there, Penn State there, but the colors of Scarlet and Gray have yet to look down on the rest of the hues in his weekly column.
And it’s the same after last week. The Georgia Bulldogs were the No. 1 team in the re-rank, but they lost to Alabama. You would naturally think then that Ohio State would move from the No. 2 spot up to the top, but instead, Myerberg seemingly put a lot of stock in Oregon’s overtime win against Penn State during whiteout conditions on Saturday night. He instead moved the Ducks to the top and kept the Buckeyes at No. 2.
Not that it really matters, because the College Football Playoff rankings are what we’re all interested in to slot the teams into the 12-team CFP, but it’s still a good talking point. Behind Oregon and Ohio State, Myerberg has Miami (FL) (3), Ole Miss (4), Texas A&M (5), Oklahoma (6), Georgia (7), Indiana (8), Penn State (9), and Iowa State (10) rounding out the top ten.
To get a look at the entire re-ranking of all 135 FBS teams, you can visit our mothership at USA TODAY and soak it all in. Oh yeah, don’t expect Ohio State to supplant Oregon this week, no matter what happens, because the Ducks are grounded on an off-week. It’ll likely take a loss by the Ducks for OSU to take that top spot.
