Ohio State had a great drive at the end of the first half of the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Miami.

It was ruined by a missed field goal by Jayden Fielding. He lined up from 49 yards and missed wide left, not close.

That let Miami keep its 14-0 lead at the half.

The worst part: The Buckeyes have a great kicker just hanging out on the sideline.

Jackson Courville had transferred to Ohio State from Ball State, in the MAC, to try to make his own way as a Big Ten kicker.

For Ball State last year, Courville made 11-for-13 kicks, including a 52-yard game winner.

There’s no guarantee Courville would do exactly this well on a bigger stage with the Buckeyes. And Ohio State’s coaching staff obviously gets to see its kickers in practice and has a lot more information to base these decisions on.

But they’re running out of time to keep the season alive. And if it ends because of placekicking, it’ll be quite painful.
