Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin named a Heisman finalist Monday

by

The Ohio State football team will have another Heisman finalist this year.

Four finalists were announced on Monday. Buckeye quarterback Julian Sayin will be headed to New York along with Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, and the favorite quarterback, Fernando Mendoza from Indiana.

Sayin had one of the best campaigns of any freshman quarterback in history. He has completed 279-of-356 passes for 3,323 yards and 31 touchdowns to just six interceptions so far in 2025. His 78.9% completion percentage leads the country, and he’s on pace to break the all-time completion percentage record of 77.4% set by both Bo Nix of Oregon (2023) and Alabama’s Mac Jones (2020).

Sayin makes the seventh OSU Heisman finalist since 2018, joining Dwayne Haskins (2018), Justin Fields and Chase Young (2019), C.J. Stroud (2021 and 2022), and Marvin Harrison Jr. (2023). None of them, however, won the bronze statue, and it is not expected that Sayin will either.

Still, going to New York is a great experience, especially for a redshirt freshman, and he’ll still have at least another year to try to be the first Ohio State player to win the award since Troy Smith in 2006.

Sayin is also a finalist for the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award. Those will all be awarded during ESPN’s College Football Awards Show on Friday night.
