An Oklahoma junior college basketball player died after he suffered an injury during a game on Saturday.
Ethan Dietz, a sophomore forward at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma, died on Tuesday, the school announced. A school spokesperson told The Associated Press that Dietz suffered some kind of head injury in the second half of a game on Saturday against Grayson College in Texas, though further specifics aren’t known.
“Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team,” the school said in a statement. “While the team and the Cowboy community are processing our own grief, our hearts go out to his family and friends.”
Dietz, a 6-foot-8 forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, had averaged 11 points and 9.4 rebounds per game so far this season for the Cowboys. He was a team captain, and a NJCAA national finalist last season.

Connors State has canceled its next two games as a result, and will host a vigil for Dietz on Dec. 1. Two upcoming women’s basketball games were canceled, too. Connors State College sits about 70 miles southeast of Tulsa, and has roughly 2,100 students.
“Ethan Dietz was the kind of player a coach always hopes for,” athletic director and head coach Bill Muse said in a statement. “He was talented athletically and academically and he understood the importance of hard work. If you ever saw him smile, you knew he was all heart. He was a person of character as well as a great teammate. Our hearts and prayers continue to be with Ethan’s family, friends and our team as we process this heartbreaking loss.”
