Oklahoma Sooners earn 11 All-SEC honors

by

It’s been a fantastic season for Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners, who went 10-2, including a 6-2 mark in SEC play, to earn their first College Football Playoff appearance since 2019. 10 Oklahoma Sooners earned All-SEC honors on Tuesday as voted on by the league’s coaches. It was the second-highest number in the league this season, led by three All-SEC first-team selections.

Earning first-team All-SEC honors were defensive end R Mason Thomas, kicker Tate Sandell, and Punter Grayson Miller. Thomas finished tied for seventh in sacks this season with 6.5, but missed the final three games due to a quadriceps injury. On his final play of the regular season, Thomas recovered a fumble forced by Owen Heinecke and rumbled for 71 yards for a touchdown to change the momentum in Oklahoma’s win over Tennessee.

Sandell, a Groza award finalist, leads the SEC in field goal percentage, making 95.8% of his kicks this season, including 23 in a row, and a nation-leading 7-for-7 on field goal attempts of more than 50 yards.

Miller leads the SEC in punting average at 46.9 yards per punt this season. He’s fourth in the nation in punts downed inside the 20 and No. 1 in the SEC. He’s only had six punts end in a touchback in 2025.

Making the second team were Isaiah Sategna, who was selected as a wide receiver and an all-purpose player, guard Febechi Nwaiwu, defensive end Taylor Wein, safety Peyton Bowen, and long snapper Ben Anderson.

Sategna is tied for second in the SEC in receiving yards with 948 yards on 65 catches. He also has seven touchdown receptions this year. He’s also been dynamic as a returner, averaging 13.2 yards per punt return.

Nwaiwu has started every game for the Oklahoma Sooners’ offensive line over the last two seasons and was a finalist for the Bullsworth Trophy, which honors the nation’s top player who started their career as a walk-on. The right guard moved to center for the Sooners’ win over LSU. He’s been a consistent presence amidst the turnover and injuries Oklahoma has suffered along the offensive line over the last couple of years.

Safety Peyton Bowen has been fantastic in his first year as a starter for the Sooners. He has 44 total tackles and leads the Sooners with two interceptions and seven pass breakups. He’s also blocked a field goal and been a force in the run game for Brent Venables’ defense.

Defensive end Taylor Wein has been the breakout star on defense for the Sooners. His 14 tackles for loss is tied for fourth in the SEC with Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell. Even without Thomas in the lineup the last three games of the season, Wein has still found ways to create splash plays in the backfield.

Long snapper Ben Anderson has been one of the most consistent parts of the Sooners special teams operations over the last several years. He was a third-team All-SEC selection in 2024.

Making the third team were tight end Jaren Kanak and cornerback Eli Bowen.

Kanak made the move from linebacker to tight end last offseason and has shown off his athleticism and speed to help reinvigorate Oklahoma’s tight end production after a pair of down years. He finished third on the team with 40 receptions for 511 yards. Though he hasn’t scored a touchdown this season, his ability after the catch has been invaluable.

Bowen is tied with his brother Peyton for the team lead in interceptions. His interception return for a touchdown against Alabama was a catalyst in the Sooners’ pivotal road win. He’s been an impact player each of the last two seasons since ascending into the starting lineup at cornerback.

Missing from the list are any of Oklahoma’s impressive defensive tackles like Gracen Halton, David Stone, Jayden Jackson, or Damonic Williams. That group combined for 23.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.

There’s also a strong case to be made for Kip Lewis, who had a monster year to lead the Oklahoma Sooners’ defense in tackles with 72 and was fifth in tackles for loss with 8.5. He also had three sacks and four passes defended.
